Counseling Services Updates - Fall 2021

Dear Students,

Welcome back to campus! We're off to a busy start to the Fall term, and I wanted to give an update on what's going on at Counseling Services right now.

Demand for initial visits is high right now, and the waiting time can be as much as 2 weeks. We pride ourselves on being as responsive as we can to our students' needs, so to accommodate this increased demand, we're adding more triage appointment slots whenever possible. We're also in the process of hiring additional clinicians, which will help us be even more flexible and responsive.

If you're waiting for an initial visit right now, thank you so much for your patience and understanding. I also want to let you know about some resources that you can might want to use while you're waiting for your appointment.

Counseling services will remain fully remote until the Counseling Office is finished with planned renovations. We anticipate returning to in-person services in the Fall term and will keep you updated here.

Counseling sessions will continue to be conducted via teletherapy, which means meeting by telephone or our encrypted, HIPAA-compliant Zoom video platform. Chat-only sessions are not available, and sessions via other teleconferencing platforms are not available.

Your eligibility for certain Counseling services will depend on where you are living. Please consult the table below to determine your eligibility for these services.

Occupational Therapy Services Updates - Fall 2021

Occupational Therapy services will remain fully remote for the time being. Sessions will continue to be conducted via teletherapy, which means meeting by telephone or our encrypted, HIPAA-compliant Zoom video platform. Chat-only sessions are not available, and sessions via other teleconferencing platforms are not available.

Your eligibility for certain Occupational Therapy services will depend on where you are living. Please consult the table below to determine your eligibility for these services.

Note: Student Wellness Services does not provide documentation for disability accommodations, emotional support animals, housing, or dining exceptions; students can contact Caltech Accessibility Services for Students at cass.caltech.edu for information about obtaining any necessary documentation.

Our practitioners are able to provide referrals to off-campus providers for neuropsychological assessment, psychoeducational evaluations, or other documentation needs.

Student Wellness Services providers can consult with an assessor or off-campus provider (with a signed release of information) if the student has been in treatment or the provider has information to contribute to the evaluation and documentation process.

Access to referrals to local therapists for open-ended or specialized psychotherapy or assessment Yes Yes - We will coach you on how to find providers in your area who accept your insurance.

Prescription Refills Yes We may be able to fill urgent or one-time prescriptions on a case-by-case basis. Please note, some prescriptions cannot be filled if you are currently not residing in California.
Referrals to other health specialists Yes This will depend on your insurance plan - please consult with a clinician at Health Services.
