Occupational Therapy Services uses a collaborative approach to help address your concerns, using a holistic lens that considers a student’s social, academic, and other contexts. Occupational therapy examines roles, habits, routines, values, and the environment around you, in order to meet your individualized needs.

By its nature, occupational therapy's scope is broad, but the most common topics students address include:
  • Academics: time management, planning and organization, goal setting, improving focus, productivity, work-life balance, procrastination
  • Physical Health: sleep, self-care, healthy eating, weight management, exercise routines, migraines, ergonomics, activities of daily living
  • Mental Health: morning and nighttime routines, managing stress and anxiety, functioning with non-visible disabilities
  • Life Coaching: motivation, decision-making, problem-solving, accountability, values and goals
  • Transitions: adjusting to campus life, post-graduation plans, changes in roles or expectations

Services Offered

Individual Session (1 hour)

These are individual sessions where the student works with an occupational therapist on an on-going basis to develop and meet the student’s goals. The occupational therapist will work with a student to develop goals in the first session, and subsequent sessions are spent checking in on goal progress, task analysis, developing new strategies, and sustaining healthy change.

Consultation (1 hour)

These are one-hour, consultation sessions that focus on identifying the student’s goal or concern and educating the referred student on various skills and strategies for the requested topic.

How do I pick between OT and counseling?

An occupational therapist would be able to offer guidance by:

  • Optimizing  day-to-day habits and routines
  • Creating short-term & long-term goals and maintaining accountability
  • Focusing on solutions by using activity analysis to recognize dysfunctional patterns
  • Developing pragmatic skills to create balance
  • Collecting data — sleep, time use, calories, steps

A counselor, on the other hand, focuses their conversation on ways to:
  • Recover from past traumas and cope with distress
  • Explore past relationships to improve self-concept and self-esteem
  • Work through underlying psychological issues that affect ability to function
  • Guiding people towards flexibility and responsiveness
  • Emotional integration and regulation
  • Awareness of past in order to promote insight and healing
  • Diagnose and treat mental disorders
